Smart deadbolt that would not lock. The lock was fine.

A Philips smart deadbolt on the exterior face of a charcoal front door, photographed after the strike was adjusted so the bolt throws cleanly.

The homeowner had a new smart deadbolt on the front door and it would not throw. It turned by hand. The motor could not. That is almost always the door rather than the lock: the frame had moved, and the pocket cut into the jamb behind the strike was no longer deep enough or square enough for the bolt to travel its full length. We opened the mortise back out, squared it, reset the strike and adjusted the tab, then threw the bolt enough times to be sure it was not a fluke. Guest-room TV mounted the same visit.

A TV on the one wall that was already full.

Guest bedroom doubling as a home office, with a computer desk on the wall the TV had to go on. The job was the geometry: high enough and far enough across to clear the desk and the furniture, square to the room, and anchored into framing rather than drywall.

The part nobody looks at.

A close-up of a latch strike plate on a door jamb with the mortise behind it opened out to bare wood.

A strike plate can line up perfectly while the hole cut behind it stops the bolt a quarter of an inch in. This is the commonest reason a smart lock will not latch, and it is a jamb problem, not an app problem.
