Video Doorbell Installation in Downingtown, PA
This is one of the jobs we do most in Downingtown. It takes about an hour when the wiring cooperates, and the reason it sometimes does not is almost always the transformer or the porch.

What usually goes wrong, and it is not the doorbell
A video doorbell draws considerably more power than a mechanical chime button ever did. Plenty of Downingtown houses — particularly anything in the borough with original wiring, and a surprising number of the 2007-onward Applecross builds — have a transformer sized for the old chime and nothing more. The doorbell installs, works for a day, then starts rebooting itself or dropping the video feed. People blame the doorbell. It is the transformer.
We check that first, before anything comes off the wall, and swap the transformer if it needs it.
The second problem is the porch. A lot of the older borough houses have the front door set back under a deep porch, and a doorbell mounted flat on that jamb points at the porch column instead of at the person standing there. That needs a wedge or an angle mount, which is a two-dollar part and the difference between footage of a face and footage of a wall.
What the job includes
- checking what is behind the existing button — most homes have a low-voltage chime, some have nothing
- transformer check, and replacing it if the doorbell needs more power than the old one drew
- mounting at a height and angle that sees a face and not the porch ceiling
- wedge or angle mount where the door is set back or the siding is not square
- getting it on the Wi-Fi and set up on your phone before we leave
A note for the Applecross end of town
The newer builds up the hill are usually the easy version of this job — there is a working transformer, the wiring is accessible, and the front door faces out squarely. Where they catch people out is Wi-Fi. A doorbell at the front of a 3,500-square-foot house with the router in the finished basement at the back is at the far edge of the signal, and a doorbell with two bars records nothing useful.
We check the signal at the door before we mount anything, and if it is marginal we will tell you — that is an access point or a mesh node, not a doorbell problem, and it is worth knowing before you spend the money rather than after.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take?
About an hour where there is existing doorbell wiring and the transformer is up to it. Add time if the transformer has to be replaced or there is no existing wiring at all.
What if there is no doorbell wiring at all?
Then it is either a battery model or we run wiring, and which one makes sense depends on your house. We will look and tell you.
Do you set it up on my phone?
Yes. We do not consider it finished until it is on your Wi-Fi, on your phone, and you have seen it work.
Do I buy the doorbell or do you?
Either. Most people buy their own because they have a brand in mind. Tell us what you have and we will tell you what else it needs before we come.
